Job Description

SUMMARY

The role of Manager, Fleet Operations is to meet or exceed the service level expectations of our customers through the daily assignment of work to a team of drivers, manage an origin(s) inventory, and work with other Fleet Managers to optimize the company's network in order to grow profitability. The activities include, but are not limited to, managing driver performance, dispatching drivers, inventory management and reconciliation, hours of service (HOS) management, communication and planning with partner small business units (SBU's). The vision of the operation is to create an organization with a high level of trust between the driver associates and the operational leadership. As such, the daily assignment and planning of work for the driver associate is strategically owned by the Fleet Manager. It is tactically key for the Fleet Manager to have regular daily contact with her/his associates to ensure they have the resources they need to do their jobs and that drivers are maintaining self-discipline to meet on-time delivery expectations for our customers and exceed minimum work standards of the company in a safe and damage free manner. The Fleet Manager has a comparative advantage in directing the network activities of their respective fleets, because of the high concentration of information (federal HOS, inventory levels, production schedules, associate needs, equipment availability, etc.) they have which is needed to achieve daily network optimization, given the volatile daily priorities on the business and its resources.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assign work to drivers, manage inventory levels in assigned locations, and optimize network on a daily basis.
  • Manage small business unit with a sense of ownership, maximizing the long-term earning potential of assigned area of responsibility.
  • Build trust with assigned direct reports, which will include drivers and may include other operations support staff.
  • Lead and build a culture of cooperation, ownership, respect and empathy in alignment with our company core competencies.
  • Meet and/or exceed operational KPI's in a way that creates a culture aligned with the organizational values.
  • Route and dispatch drivers, build loads, and optimize earning potential of assigned equipment and human capital resources.
  • Collaborate with other Fleet Managers to meet both company KPI's and the KPI's for the small business unit.
  • Responsibly receive, transmit, and handle consumer and customer data per applicable policies and procedures.
  • Review and follow data privacy practices, policies, and guidelines.
  • Conduct performance management feedback sessions with direct reports, collaborating with human resources to develop best practices and techniques adopted by the organization.
  • Lead and manage the risk management components of the small business unit, including the corrective action process.
  • Participate and lead the corporate initiatives throughout the year, to ensure direct reports are completing tasks timely.
  • Responsibly receive, transmit, and handle consumer and customer data per applicable policies and procedures.
  • Review and follow data privacy practices, policies, and guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises one or more employees. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree preferred; Eight (8) to ten (10) years of work experience required, preferably with transportation or related industry. Three (3) to five (5) years of management experience required. Ideal candidate also has experience managing transportation drivers complying with DOT and FMCSR regulations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an associate to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of the job, the associate is required on a daily basis to analyze and interpret data, communicate, and remain in a stationary position for a significant amount of the work day; and frequently access, input, and retrieve information from the computer and other office productivity devices. The associate is regularly required to move about the office and around the corporate campus. The associate is occasionally required to travel to other sites, including out-of-state, where applicable, for business. The associate must frequently move up to 10 pounds and occasionally move up to 25 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an associate encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While the job is generally performed in an office environment, the associate is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, areas in which moving mechanical parts, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals are present, and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the office environment is typically quiet, but the associate may be occasionally exposed to loud noise levels.

Travel Required

Minimal travel is required for this position (up to 20% of the time and on a domestic basis).
