Nutrition and Food Sciences Student Assistant IV/Phlebotomist

Phlebotomist will be responsible for assisting researchers with data collection to include blood samples. Work is performed under the protocol and supervision of researchers.

Reports to: Derek Miketinas, Ph.D., Nutrition and Food Sciences-Houston; and Wayne Brewer, Ph.D., Physical Therapy-Houston.

Supervises: No supervisory responsibilities

Essential Duties:

  • Obtains blood and laboratory specimens from research participants of all ages, using venipuncture and capillary collections methods.
  • Processes laboratory specimens according to protocol including by centrifugation and separation.
  • Provides for the security and privacy of all research participants and privileged information for ensuring research participants' right to privacy.
  • Displays an attitude of caring and courtesy toward all research participants as appropriate, by treating them as customers, greeting them with a smile, referring to them by name, responding quickly to their needs, maintaining confidentiality and treating them at all times with dignity and respect.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of safety collection devices and follows universal precautions.
  • Adheres to organization and governmental standards, rules and regulations.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent required. Successful completion of Phlebotomist certification required.

Experience

  • Experience placing IV catheter safely and efficiently.
  • Preferred: experience as a phlebotomist, nurse, paramedic, emergency medical technician, or related discipline.

Requirement

  • Reliable attendance at the University during regular scheduled days and work hours is an essential function of this position.
  • Time commitment: 1-5 hours per subject(s) visit

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - The following are essential:

  • Knowledge of blood drawing techniques.
  • Knowledge to safeguard patient privacy.
  • Skills in interpersonal communication.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff and the public.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and charts
  • Ability to clearly communicate verbally and in writing.

Ability to represent the department and University in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner
